I have two natures in me. A light side. A shadow side. So do you. I don’t want to admit to my ‘stuff’ hiding in the dark any more than anybody else does, but I get that they make me who I am. The two natures are a a sad fact of life—a sad fact of being human. Or at least it seems like it’s sad. Light side. Dark side. Two natures.
I first learned about our two natures back in the 1970’s when I used big books of Greek and Hebrew to study scripture. Scripture calls them the old man and the new man, the old nature and the new nature, the man of the spirit and the man of the earth. I’ve come to think of it as the the spirit and the ego. The ego is a fearful greedy gut.
First, be gentle with ourselves….and others. Since we’ve all got them, we might as well be nice. Then there’s holding to the light side, magnifying it, focusing on it, minimizing the dark side until it disappears in much the same way darkness disappears when a light switch is flipped on. Boiled down to essence our two natures are Love and Fear—both a noun and verb.
Both sides bear fruit but the fruit of the light side is way more fun: love, joy, goodness, meekness, kindness., patience. As Love moves more deeply into the soul the fruit naturally shows up. Root, plant, blossom, fruit. Like so many spiritual paths, the fruiting expands as we get more deeply into the principles they get more deeply into us.
